Positioned just under a 40 minute drive from our luxury North Norfolk holiday cottages, it is the ideal place to visit for a day out.

About Gressenhall

Gressenhall is a former workhouse and farm located within 50 acres of countryside. Now an extensive museum, it explores and shows what life was like for those who once lived and worked there. There are many fascinating objects and interactive displays that use projections to bring the exhibits to life as you walk around the workhouse and out onto the farm. Its variety of attractions, educational offerings and parks and walks make it the perfect place for family activities, and experience workshops in traditional crafts.

What you can see and do at Gressenhall

There are plenty of attractions, meaning there is something for everyone to enjoy including:

  • The workhouse museum which enables visitors to stand in a real life workhouse setting listening to stories of the people who once lived there and learn about their lives through a combination of projections, archives and collections.
  • The museum of Norfolk life houses over 2,000 objects which reveal more about what life was like for people living in the last 200 years. This is a temporary exhibition space which changes every year, which is great for those who are frequent visitors.
  • Gressenhall farm was used to produce food for the inmates at the workhouse and today showcases a wide range of Norfolk rare breed animals and traditional farming techniques showing how activities would have been carried out. The range of animals include Suffolk Punch Horses, Red Poll and British White Cattle.
  • Adventure Playground is perfect for those visiting with family and is brand new to Gressenhall. It has sensory stimulation equipment, slides, basket swings, rope bridges, and much more.
  • The Gardens are home to a wide selection of species and planting techniques with the cherry tree cottage gardens which were created by volunteer gardeners being a particular favourite. The fruit trees, roses, lavender and orchard are also must-sees. Some of the other gardens include the Centenary wood, Wildlife garden, Farmhouse garden and Wildlife walk.
  • The village row is a traditional set of shops including a general store, village post office and blacksmiths which offers a unique insight into what the village would have looked like in years gone by.
  • There is also a range of daily activities and events which include a stamper trail, activity sheets, craft activities and guest talks.

Food and Drink

The Mardlers’ Rest Café is open daily to visitors offering a range of delicious treats and meals. There is also a lot of space for picnics for you to bring your own food and enjoy.

Tickets

The workhouse and farm requires tickets for entry which can be purchased here. There is a range of tickets for special event day prices, and if you are a holder of Norfolk Museum Pass your admission is covered.
