Gardens to Visit in North Norfolk

Gardens to Visit in North Norfolk

North Norfolk is full of beautifully landscaped gardens, from large stately homes to tranquil parks. A walk round these manicured gardens is a great way to spend an afternoon, and each season they dramatically change so there is something to see all year round.

Our luxury romantic holiday cottages are located in the idyllic countryside of Holt, and are perfectly situated close to some of the region’s best gardens for you to visit whilst you stay.

Sheringham Park

Home to the nationally important collection of Rhododendrons, the Wild Garden at Sheringham Park covers over 50 acres. Containing over 80 species of Rhododendron and Azalea, the park is one of the best places in the East of England to see these stunning flowers in bloom which are best seen at the start of summer (flowering from November to August, but best seen in May and June).  The garden is also home to one of the largest Scots pines outside of Scotland and is full to the brim with flourishing tree and plant species.

Blickling Estate

As one of the National Trust stately homes in the region, the Blickling Estate has a stunning collection of gardens that are open to the public. The 55 acres of formal gardens are as a result of three centuries worth of planning and include a walled kitchen garden, orangery complete with citrus trees, topiary and yew hedges and landscaped secret garden. The lime and turkey oak are said to be a must see when visiting. You can also spend the day looking round the main house learning about the history of the Jacobean mansion.

East Ruston Old Vicarage

This stunning 32 acre modern garden is located close to the coastal town of Happisburgh. The Old Vicarage is complete with garden rooms, borders, gravel landscaping and a sunken rose garden. Within the garden there are areas dedicated to different styles and habitat influences with a mediterranean, woodland and exotic garden as well as their popular Dutch Garden and King’s Walk. The Old Vicarage is considered one of the finest privately owned gardens in North Norfolk, and is definitely worth a visit.

Houghton Hall

Winner of the Christie’s Historic Houses Association ‘Garden of the Year Award’ in 2007, the stunning gardens of Houghton Hall get more beautiful each year. The Walled garden is one of the most popular at this estate, and the remaining gardens are divided into several ornamental gardens including a rose parterre, fruit and vegetable garden and fountains.

Gooderstone Water Gardens

A slightly smaller garden compared to some of our other favourites, Gooderstone Water Garden is an enchanting 6 acre garden displaying the beautiful tranquillity and harmony between water and our native plant species. With thirteen numbered bridges, a natural trout stream and Kingfisher hide it is the perfect location to escape.

Raveningham Estate

Explore herbaceous and mixed borders, wildflower meadows are rolling lawns at Raveningham Estate’s gardens. With a herb, rose and time garden all dedicated to Sir Francis Bacon’s essays on the passage of time there is a combination of history and landscaped design used throughout. The Victorian walled kitchen garden, arboretum and lake are surrounded by sculptures created by Susan Bason and are well worth a visit.
